About Friends of Rising Sun Library
Who We Are
Friends of the Rising Sun Library is a 501(c)-3 non-profit organization that serves as the fundraising arm for the Cecil County Public Library's Rising Sun branch.
Our Mission
"To provide the resources to the Rising Sun Library for quality programs to address the needs of the Rising Sun community."
What We Do
Maintain an active group who support the Rising Sun library, advocate on their behalf and lend legislative support when needed.
Receive and encourage gifts, endowments, and bequests to Cecil County Public Library for the future benefit of the Rising Sun Library and services.
Focus the community on the library and encourage use of services, resources and facilities.
Our History
1942 - Rising Sun Community Library opens in Janes Methodist Church.
1947 - The library becomes a branch of Cecil County Public Library.
1948 - The library moves to a recreational room in the Rising Sun fire station at the corner of South Queen and Cherry Streets.
1957 – The library moves to the newly constructed Jacob B. McVey Memorial Town Hall.
1989 - Friends of the Rising Sun Library is founded.
1994 - The library opens at its current location on 111 Colonial Way.
2010 – Friends fund addition of Donation Plaque.
2015 – To recognize the contributions of the Graham Family’s support of education in the community, named the Meeting Room in their honor.
2016 – The library reopens after extensive updates including a dedicated early childhood education room.
2020 - Friends fund installation of learning panels in children’s room.
2023 – Friends funds New Library Signage.
2024 – Friends pledges approximately $50,000 in funds to update the Graham Meeting Room audio/visual system, tables, chairs and storage unit, as well as a new shed with a covered walkway.
